2nd graders have continued to explore, observe and study worms. After unveiling the “worm tunnel” the kids were excited and surprised to see the extent of tunneling the worms did in just 5 days!
They then carried out sensory experiment: can worms smell? After making predictions based on all they have learned about worms, we placed one worm at a time on a plate with soil (our control substance), a piece of apple, lettuce, and a gummy worm! The kids had a few minutes to watch each worm before exchanging it for a new worm. After three different worms, the kids analysed their data to make a conclusion. The final takeaway: worms do not have noses but they do have chemoreceptors in their skin whereby they “sense” odors!
