Volunteering at the Magic Hat enriches the education of Bell School Students! The funding we receive covers the cost of our extensive Cultural Enrichment programs – which include the visits and workshops the children enjoy throughout the year from organisations such as the Tanglewood Marionettes and individuals like DJ Ooch plus all the lessons and activities they do in the school’s organic garden. Without the funding, these programs simply would not happen.
WHAT IS THE MAGIC HAT? The Magic Hat is a registered non-profit thrift shop established to raise funds that enhance the education of children in Marblehead Public Schools. WHERE IS IT LOCATED? WHEN IS IT OPEN? The Magic Hat is located in the basement below the gym of the Veteran’s Middle School on Pleasant Street. Parking is available next to the Magic Hat, just follow the signs around the back of the school. The Magic Hat is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-2 pm and Saturday from 9am-1 pm.
HOW IS THE $$ DISBURSED? Every April and October, the 6 Marblehead Public Schools receive a percentage share of the Magic Hat’s net profit for that allocation period. In order to receive ANY of the money disbursed, each school MUST meet an established number of volunteer hours. If a school does not meet their hours, it will not receive a share of the profit for that period.
HOW MANY VOLUNTEER HOURS ARE REQUIRED? Bell School is required to fill a minimum of 180 volunteer hours at the Magic Hat per allocation period.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? Volunteer! Several of our most dedicated volunteers have moved on from Bell School and are now giving their hours to the middle schools. We need some new faces! If each Bell School Family committed to 4-6 volunteer hours per calendar year, Bell School’s share of the funds would soar!
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER? Anyone over the age of 5 can volunteer. This includes moms, dads, grandparents, friends, aunts and uncles! Children love to help at the Magic Hat! They do need to be able to focus and complete tasks. Volunteers age 5-16 must be chaperoned by an adult volunteer who must sign a waiver about safety and supervision.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO? When you show up at the Magic Hat, the first thing you need to do is sign the Bell page in the volunteers folder, so we have a record of the time you spend there – just remember to sign out when you leave. One of the Magic Hat team members will give you a quick tour around the store if necessary. You will then be asked to help with tasks such as organizing the clothing racks, sorting through donations or hanging and tagging clothes. Tasks are easy, fun and no previous experience is required. WHEN CAN YOU VOLUNTEER? Anytime the shop is open during the week – Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 2pm. Your time will always be credited towards Bell’s target. We also have designated weeks (see dates below), when we need to fill in as many hours as possible during the week as well as on the Saturday (9am – 1pm).
