Did you know that the average age a child gets a smartphone is 10 years old and that children are spending between 6 and 9 hours a day on media? There is a wonderful resource to help parents delay the smartphone and give their children more time smartphone-free, and you can sign even if your child is only in Kindergarten right now.
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike regarding children having a smartphone.
Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge. The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone (exposure to inappropriate content, anxiety surrounding private chatrooms, etc…).

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Fun Run! We have raised over $16,000 for Bell School. Thank you for sharing your love of Bell School with family and friends. These funds will be going towards 30 additional iPads, iPads Keyboards, playground supplies, Field Day and the Third Grade Celebration! Here are a few snapshots from the day, thanks to Abby Lewis!

|2nd graders concluded their 3-part workshop with Change is Simple. This workshop delved into the concept of the food mile and why we should care about the distance our food travels. Questions asked of the kids: Where does your food come from? How many miles away? Why buy an apple from New Zealand when we have the ability to buy an apple 10 miles away? What’s the cost to the environment of buying food from 2,000 or 5,000 miles away? POLLUTION!|
Using a massive world map spread on the floor, the kids broke into groups of five representing a fruit grown on 5 of the 7 continents, and measured from their fruit’s origination to Marblehead. Geography and math were a big part of this workshop!
Thank you again to the Friends’ of Marblehead Public Schools for making this possible! And a BIG thank you to Change is Simple who taught all the Bell 2nd graders and teachers that change truly is simple and each of us can make small contributions that play a big role in caring for the environment!
HARVEST OF THE MONTH
The May Harvest of the Month is Seafood. We are currently unable to taste local seafood at school. However, we are encouraging parents to try a seafood dish at home with students. Please see the PTO website for two tasty fish recipes. Students will receive the Seafood card as usual to take home in the next week. Our popular annual Fun Run is TOMORROW, Wednesday, May 22nd (rain date: May 23rd). Everyone is welcome to come and watch this lively and fun event to celebrate fitness, school spirit and help raise funds for playground supplies, technology for the classrooms and end of year activities like Field Day and the 3rd Grade Celebration.

|Look for Shealah Bunnell at tomorrow’s FUN RUN! Save $10 off registration when you register tomorrow for only $15. Let’s show her some Bell love! Shealah Bunnell is a former Bell student and is currently a senior at Marblehead High School. For her senior project she is starting a race, Run Your Bunns Off, in honor of her late father. The race will take place on June 9th at 10 am at the Village School Track. There will be four different age groups. |
– 6 to 8 year olds will run a 1/4 mile
– 9 to 12 year olds will run a 1/2 mile
-13 to 17 year olds will run a mile
-18+ will run a mile
Shealah’s father recently passed away from Lymphoma Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital. She and her family wanted to give back to the hospital so they decided that all the proceeds will go to the Caring For A Cure Fund at MGH. This allows nurses on the cancer floors, Lunder 9 and 10, to help the patients in anyway they can to make them feel themselves again. For example, if a patient is starting physical therapy and does not have sneakers, this money would allow the nurses to get the patient new sneakers.
Lost and Found: The Lost and Found is growing! If you are missing coats, mittens, hat, shirts, etc, be sure to visit the lost and found which is located at both Upper and Lower Bell lobbies.
Our popular annual Fun Run is returning for a 4th year on Wednesday, May 22nd (rain date: May 23rd). All students should be bringing home a special flyer this week with more information.
Join us at this lively and fun event and celebrate fitness, school spirit and help raise funds for playground supplies, technology for the classrooms and end of year activities like Field Day and the 3rd Grade Celebration.
Getting sponsored is definitely optional – but the kids enjoy thinking of creative ways to raise money! Plus it’s a great way to increase their motivation to run! To make things even easier this year, we’ve again teamed up with The Get Movin’ Crew to enable each student to create their own simple, private fundraising web page – so getting online donations from friends and family who may live far away – or even close by – should be a breeze! We’ll also be giving out fun prizes for those who make an effort to get sponsors.
All you have to do now is register your student at www.thegetmovincrew.com by Friday, May 15th and set up their private fundraising page. Everyone who registers online will also receive a special Fun Run sweatband!

Thank you to the Friends’ of Marblehead Public Schools for awarding the 2nd grade with a grant to work, play and learn with Change is Simple. Change is Simple will be providing each class with 3 one-hour workshops this spring, digging deeper into subject areas previously touched upon: soil and erosion, water systems, and food systems and food justice.SOIL – Why do we care about dirt so much? The kids realized through an enlightening and very funny conversation that all our food —vegetables, fruit, beef (grass the cows eat) and yes, even candy (sugar cane, cocoa beans) comes from the soil. Yet when we look at the Earth’s make-up, soil is a pretty small sliver. (Photo Earth -sitting in a circle)What are the soil horizons? Their depth? What are each layer made up of in Massachusetts? What horizon do plants grow in? What can effect the layers? EROSION! After a thoughtful conversation about soil, sediment, bedrock, and the causes of erosion (“wind, water, people, buildings”) the kids broke into groups to feel the 3 horizon layers and make their own soil profile. (Photo – small group with jars and small piece of paper)Let’s roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty and make a stream simulation! The kids created a number of different scenarios for their stream from your basic stream; to a forking stream; to one with rocks along the edges; and trees, bridges and finally buildings. Through each hands-on experiment, the kids saw examples of erosion (“the land is collapsing!”) and recognized that rocks and trees act as a structure for the rivers and slow erosion. There was great energy and excitement! (Photos – water/soil table)“Trees need soil, and the soil needs the trees!”, exclaimed one 2nd grader at the wrap up. Change is Simple brought the lesson full circle by asking the kids to dig deep (no pun intended!) and think about one thing THEY can do as 2nd graders to help the soil: COMPOST and make new, rich soil! This is something they are experts on after 5 weeks in the fall learning about worms and composting!
